According to Wikipedia:
Technorati is an Internet search engine for searching blogs, competing with Google and Yahoo!. As of June 2008, Technorati indexes 112.8 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media.[2] The name Technorati is a portmanteau, pointing to the technological version of literati, or intellectuals.
“Portmanteau”. Wow, that IS intellectual.
I first heard about Technorati when I was working at a web development company in 2006. I had just come back from a 10-month maternity leave and I couldn’t believe how much the web world changed in such a short amount of time. I came back and AJAX had transformed user experiences, making interfaces more responsive and intuitive and much easier to navigate and use. Social media was taking the world by storm. Everyone and their dog (literally) seemed to have a blog.
Anyway, it seems to be one of the standard ping-back sites for all fledgling bloggers like me. Very easy to set up.
Why bother?
Although it’s not as effective as it used to be (everyone is doing it these days), having sites like Technorati crawl your blog entries means that you have more links to your web site. More links is good because it helps to increase your PageRank in Google. The other happy side effect of Technorati is that other Technorati users can search on the Technorati site using keywords and potentially land on your site. You can also comb other analogous blogs in Technorati and start adding them to your own list. By increasing your activity on other blogs, you potentially raise your own blog profile in the overall blogosphere.
Technorati isn’t the only pingback service available. According to Wordpress, here are some other suggested update services:

And like I said, setting up your blog in Technorati is pretty straight-forward.
Setting Up Your Blog in Technorati:
- Create your profile.
- Verify your email address. You should get this in a couple of minutes.
- Claim your blog by entering your URL.
- Put the code snippet in a front page blog post. You can delete it later. But for your sake, it looks something like this: Technorati Profile
- If you have not already done so, enter your ping-back in your blog software. To find out more on how to do this, you can visit Technorati’s article on Ping Configurations.
