1. What or who inspired you to start your business?
Well, my inspiration to have my own business must come from my parents and my grandparents as they’ve all had their own businesses since I can remember. The inspiration to really make a living online actually came after we had a house fire (about 4 years ago). We lost our home and most everything we had. My kids were devastated and I really wanted to be “there” for them. I made a firm decision that I would no longer work outside the home and I’ve never looked back.
2. What motivates you?
As with most moms, my kids are my biggest motivators! I want them to see that hard work pays off – because it’s personally rewarding and it’s financially rewarding. I am also very motivated to help others learn how to make a living online (especially fellow moms). I know how hard it is to start and run your own online business so I’ve dedicated myself to helping as many people as possible through my blog. On a lighter note, I must say, as I move into a relaxing “season” in life I find that travel motivates me more and more too (and a nice glass of wine)!
3. How do you balance being a mom and an entrepreneur?
Oh boy. This is a biggie for most all mommy entrepreneurs. We have 5 kids (my 3 and my husband’s 2 . ages 7-14) and juggling work and their schedules is very difficult some days. But I wouldn’t change a thing. My kids have been raised around me working from home so they’ve known from day one that there will be times that even though I’m “home,” I’m busy and I need them to work on something independently. With that said, I also love being home and being able to put them first if they need me for any reason.
4. What do you love most about what you do?
I can honestly say that what I love most about what I do is the chance to meet such wonderful people online. In November of 2008 I competed in (and won) season two of the online blogging competition, “Blogging Idol.” During that contest I really “put myself out there” and it has lead to some amazing friendships (and now a fantastic business partnership). I get to make a living meeting new people and helping them learn how to make money online – I truly love what I do!
5. What single piece of advice would you give someone who is starting out?
It’s difficult for me to narrow this down to a single one! I’m going to go with “learn to ask for help.” As women it seems we are always the first to offer help to others but we’re usually terrible at asking for help when we need it. Whether it’s help with your kids so you can get our work done, help with a website, or promoting your business I find that most people are more than willing to help if you just ask. *SmiLes* Suzanne
