Lindsay Harris is the founder of Glow Baby, home of Baby’s First Journal, which helps parents keep track of all the important details in their baby’s day.
1. What or who inspired you to start your business?
I was inspired to start my business by my two beautiful daughters. I was lucky enough to be able to stay home with my first daughter and not return to work after my maternity leave. I had hoped to stay home with both my girls until they started kindergarten; however, the economy this year forced me to face the fact that I needed to bring in some income. After a great deal of soul searching, I realized that I would never be happy working for someone else and that I had a lot of great ideas of ways to help families stay organized in a fun and stylish way. As a result, Glow Baby was born. I created “Baby’s First Journal” first as I was in the midst of the newborn stage with my youngest and was desperate for a easy to use, portable log book to keep track of her feeding, sleeping and diapering, not to mention baths and vitamins. I am currently working on additional products for the next stages of family life.
2. What motivates you?
The satisfaction of knowing I am producing a useful product that will be enjoyed by other parents motivates me. I felt very unprepared when I had my first child and this feeling motivated me to create “Baby’s First Journal” to help other new parents through the tough first few months with their newborn.
3. How do you balance being a mom and an entrepreneur?
I do my work while my girls are napping and after they go to bed at night. I try to keep the computer closed as much as I can during the day and I look for signs in my children to see if they are asking for more time with me. If they start asking, I know I’m working too much and I purposely cut back. The point of starting my own business was to be able to still spend quality time with my girls so I am mindful of this.
4. What do you love most about what you do?
I love being able to be creative and create the products that I had always wished I could find. I am an avid searcher and I get frustrated when I can’t find what I am looking for. I love that I am taking control and filling these gaps.
5. What single piece of advice would you give someone who is starting out?
The best advice I would give someone starting out is to ask lots of questions of whoever will listen. I have gotten a lot of great tips and advice from other mompreneurs just from asking.
