Kim Flanagan of Mommy Wear Daily
“Stay true to yourself and your idea,” advises Kim Flanagan of Mommy Wear Daily. “If you feel passionate about it it will work – and work it will be, but you will love (mostly) every minute of it!”
Kim says that her body inspired her to start her mommy stylist business. After her second pregnancy ended in a stillbirth, Kim found herself quickly pregnant again. While recovering from that shock and pain, she also was the recipient of some hard advice from her doctor, who reminded her: “I was my first born’s mother and my son needed me to be the original mother that delivered him. Not some other mother.”
At first it felt like a slap in the face, but Kim knew that her doctor could not have been more right. In the past, she had been very creative with her wardrobe, especially through her pregnancies, and it was time for Kim to find her whole self again – heels and all.
Kim had always been someone on the look-out for products that helped her get dressed, and as she found key pieces, she realized that other women – pregnant or not – also were looking for fashion tips and tricks that fit and worked for their lifestyle.
While working at Posh Boutique in Calgary, Kim discovered that she was not the only one wondering where the clothes were and how to wear them. Kim understands that dressing for motherhood can be particularly challenging. While there are rules for dressing for work, “there are no rules with this job called Mom.” Kim saw a need to help give those moms some “rules” – or at least an idea of what to wear and how to wear it. “As I found products or knew pieces that worked, I put them online and soon people were emailing and asking questions.”
Kim began Mommy Wear Daily in the evenings when her babies were sleeping. “I really try and plan around the family schedule which [usually] works,” says Kim, but like all mom entrepreneurs, her rhythm can easily be overthrown by one sick kid – so she takes it day by day, week by week. Kim counts herself lucky to be in her line of business: since most of her clients are moms, most of her clients understand the juggle.
She also finds working with these women to be the most motivating part of her work. As a fashion lover, Kim loves passing on some of that love to clients who may have lost it or never had it. “Changing someone’s outlook on their bodies and life is something else!”
Kim is particularly rewarded when she sees the transformation in her clients’ faces and body language. “Giving mommy her groove back rocks!”
