5 Questions is a new series where online business women are asked 5 questions about being a mom and entrepreneur. To be featured, please contact me.
Holly Reisem Hanna is the founder of The Work at Home Woman, an online business resource and blog for women and moms who wish to work from home or become self employed.
1. What or who inspired you to start your business?
In 2007 my daughter was born, and from the minute she was placed in my arms, I knew that I would not be able to return to my full-time job as a RN Clinical Research Coordinator. With the support of my husband, I was able to quit my full-time job and become a full-time stay a home mom.
Motivated to find a way to make some extra money from home, I started asking past employers and friends if there was any work that I could do for them while caring for my daughter at home. My networking efforts paid off and in December 2007 I started working from home by completing marketing research, establishing joint ventures and working as a social network liaison for a small publishing company that a friend was working for.
During this time I learned a lot of valuable marketing skills and became very familiar with the work at home market. Motivated to become self-employed and to help other women and moms do the same, I decided to create The Work at Home Woman and share my research and knowledge with other women and moms who had the desire to work from home.
2. What motivates you?
Just the fact that I am able to be readily available for my daughter and the fact that I’m doing something that I enjoy keeps me motivated and focused.
3. How do you balance being a mom and an entrepreneur?
I create a daily schedule and media calendar for all of my daily activities. I work in the morning before my daughter wakes up and then again in the afternoon while she is napping. Occasionally I need to work at night or on the weekends when I have extra tasks to complete, but this works out well because my husband can watch our daughter.
4. What do you love most about what you do?
I love when other women and moms contact me and tell me how much The Work at Home Woman has helped them. It truly makes me happy to know that I have helped someone with their work at home search or self-employment quest.
5. What single piece of advice would you give someone who is starting out?
Do lots of research and talk to other people who are in the same business. I can’t tell you how much it has helped me to network with other like minded individuals and build a community of support and friendship.
