5 Questions is a new series where online business women are asked 5 questions about being a mom entrepreneur. To be featured, please contact me.
Corri Bitner is a homeschooling mom of three and the designer and publisher of the Chaos Simplified Woman’s Day Planner.
1. What or who inspired you to start your business?
Definitely my husband! I’ve always had a desire to want to do all that I do, the best that I can. With so much going on, I always seemed “disorganized” and it seemed like a lost cause to stay on top of things. I thought: if I could just find the right organizer, I could pull it together. My 10-year search for that planner just wasn’t successful. I’m a very visual person and I totally needed to be able to “see” everything in front of me. About three years ago, I had a creative moment (I still don’t know really where I found that spare minute, never mind the creative part of it), and I announced to my husband that since I couldn’t find one that “worked” for me, I was just going to make my own! I showed him my idea and he said “Why don’t you get it published!” Poor, sweet guy – ever since he made that statement he’s definitely lost some hair over it!
2. What motivates you?
Wanting to spend as much time as I can with my kids, while still doing my part to help out financially. They’re only young for such a short time. I’ve played out in my mind at different times, how much easier things would be financially if I had a “real” full-time job. Every time I think about it, I just get this sick feeling in my stomach. I know that for me, I just can’t do it, if it’s at all possible for me to make it work another way.
3. How do you balance being a mom and an entrepreneur?
I think it’s pretty impossible to balance everything all the time, but that’s okay. It’s getting the most out of the life that you have that matters. Doing the best that you can to balance needs to be enough or we’ll drive ourselves completely insane!
4. What do you love most about what you do?
I love that it reflects me and who I am. I found that so often I was getting lost in life. Too often when we moms think about “us”, we just feel plain selfish. I wanted who I was to grow and when I started the day planner and getting into all it entailed, I felt like me! I think women take on so much. If in some way, creating this day planner will assist in easing off that load for someone, that’ll be reason enough to have done it.
5. What single piece of advice would you give someone who is starting out?
If someone offers to help in any which way (like taking the kids for a few hours), just say “thanks” and take them up on it.
