Corinne McDermott with her two kids
Corinne McDermott is the founder and president of Have Baby Will Travel. 5 Questions is a series where online business women are asked 5 questions about life as a mom and entrepreneur. To be featured, please contact me.
1. What or who inspired you to start your business?
My husband and I wanted to take a vacation with our daughter before my first maternity leave was up. I was a nervous mom and the idea of going around the block freaked me out, never mind leaving the country. I turned to the internet to look for a website that would feature the wisdom and advice from other moms who’ve traveled with their babies, and I couldn’t find anything. The lightbulb to actually start the site myself went on after I returned to my (then) full-time job.
2. What motivates you?
I’m motivated by the feedback I receive from families saying that my site was a big help to them. My goal is to inspire and motivate other new moms and dads to continue to travel now that they have tots in tow, and to help them with their travel plans.
3. How do you balance being a mom and an entrepreneur?
Right now, I’m still finding that balance. My daughter has just started Junior Kindergarten and my son is just 5-months-old, so I’m squeezing in writing and updating here and there. Once we’re in the swing of things, my goal is to do a bit in the morning, while my daughter’s at school and my son naps, and a few hours in the evening and on weekends. It’s important to me to be present for my children, as well as furthering my business.
4. What do you love most about what you do?
I love travel, so when I can’t actually do it myself, I love hearing about other’s adventures and/or helping them figure out where to jet off to. Now that I’m working for myself full-time, I love being able to walk my daughter to school, and take her to the park. I love that I’m home with my son, and I won’t have to relive the day where I left to work outside the house.
5. What single piece of advice would you give someone who is starting out?
Be determined. There have been a lot of stumbling blocks, and I’m lucky to have incredibly supportive family and friends. This is a lot more work than I anticipated, but it hasn’t been a struggle. So long as it stays that way, I know I’m on the right track.
