5 Questions is a series where online business women are asked 5 questions about being a mom entrepreneur. To be featured, please contact me.
Barbara Schantz is the inventor of BabyDipper, a bowl for infants and toddlers for easy feeding with one hand.
1. What or who inspired you to start your business?
My husband encouraged me from the moment he saw my first sketch of the Baby Dipper bowl. He is an inventor himself (of antennas!), so he helped me conduct some prior art research on the U.S. Patent & Trademark web site and we haven’t looked back from those days.
2. What motivates you?
The continual encouragement I receive through reviews, emails, and other conversations with moms who tell me that they can’t imagine life now without a Baby Dipper bowl in their households.
3. How do you balance being a mom and an entrepreneur?
I try to divide my day into small chunks of business time and personal time. I swing by the computer to check on things throughout the day, but save most of the serious business work until after the kids are asleep or before they wake up in the mornings.
4. What do you love most about what you do?
Hearing positive comments about the Baby Dipper bowl from other moms and knowing that my invention is truly helping a growing number of parents out there.
5. What single piece of advice would you give someone who is starting out?
Do lots of background research, maybe even find a mentor, to make sure that you’ve clarified what some realistic goals are for your business idea.
