5 Questions is a new series where online business women are asked 5 questions about being a mom and entrepreneur. To be featured, please contact me.
Amy Bellgart is the founder of Mom Made That!, the place to list, shop and support mom businesses and blogs.
1. What or who inspired you to start your business?
In November 2008, I was approached by a mom inventor who asked if I were creating a Holiday Gift Guide for Mom Spark, and, if so, could she be included. At first, I was reluctant to do it because I knew it would be a HUGE undertaking. When I was asked the same question by two, three, and then four more mothers, I decided I better do it! As expected, the project was massive and I stayed up late many nights compiling it together. What I didn’t expect, however, were the friendships I would make, the talents I would come across, and the demand from my readers to see more moms in action.
After the Mom Spark Holiday Gift Guide was complete, I couldn’t stop. I thought to myself, “Why couldn’t I have a gift guide all year long?” and from that Mom Made That! was born! We opened our “doors” on December 19, 2008 and have grown immensely in five short months. We have even included mom blogs, reviews, giveaways and more!
2. What motivates you?
My clients motivate me. When I hear testimonials like, “I just got contacted by an online toy store that wants to carry my books b/c they saw them on MomMadeThat,” or, “I saw an increase in traffic the first day after I signed up with Mom Made That,” I feel like I’m doing something right and want to work even harder.
3. How do you balance being a mom and an entrepreneur?
Funny, I just wrote an article on this on Mom Spark! It can be difficult juggling family and work, mostly because I am a perfectionist. I’m still learning how to throw perfection out the window, take care of my family first, and then tend to my clients. I have a ways to go on my time management skills, but I’m getting there.
4. What do you love most about what you do?
I love working from home. Working from home allows me the chance to contribute financially AND be here for my family.
5. What single piece of advice would you give someone who is starting out?
My best advice would be to do what you love, but don’t let it get in the way of your family. If you love your business, you will excel at it!
